Close enough is not good enough
We set up a New Zealand test store and put real orders through Shopify. On each of them, one of the obvious ways to work out GST gives a different answer from what Shopify actually charged. The figures below are from our New Zealand store only - we have not yet run Australian test orders. An invoice that is one cent out does not reconcile with your Shopify reports.
Two of the same item
2 × $24.95. Shopify charged $6.51 GST. Worked out per item, it comes to $6.50.
A small price, three times
Three stickers at $1.50 plus a $9.95 item. Shopify's GST is $1.89. From the order total it is $1.88. Item by item it is $1.90.
A discount on the whole order
10% off a $949.95 board and a $24.95 wax. Shopify's line still reads $949.95, but GST was charged on $854.95. Printed side by side, they do not add up.
A New Zealand export to Australia
Shopify records no GST line at all, not even 0%. It states the zero rate rather than leaving a blank.
A donation in the cart
Shopify attaches "GST 15%: $0.00" to it. Printed as it is, that looks like a wrong rate. It shows the line as not taxable instead.
Refunding one item
Refund 1 of 3 stickers and Shopify returns $0.19 GST. The formula says $0.20. Its credit notes use the amount Shopify actually refunded.
Figures from our own New Zealand test store, orders #1001 to #1005, 26 September 2026. Prices include New Zealand GST at 15%. We have not yet run test orders through an Australian store.

For GST-registered stores only. In New Zealand you must register once your turnover reaches $60,000 in 12 months; in Australia the threshold is A$75,000 turnover in any 12-month period (ato.gov.au). If you are not registered, this is not for you yet.
