Connecting AI to Your Business Data with an MCP Connector

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open specification that allows AI assistants like Claude or ChatGPT to connect to external business systems, databases, and APIs. Instead of manually exporting spreadsheets or pasting sensitive business records into chat windows, an MCP connector acts as a bridge: when you ask a question, the AI assistant requests specific information through the connector, the connector queries your live business software, and the assistant returns an answer based on your actual data.

What an MCP connector lets an AI assistant do

A custom MCP connector links AI assistants directly to the software your business already runs, such as your point of sale, CRM, job management, or accounting platform.

Instead of generic conversational exchanges, you can ask specific operational questions in plain language and receive answers drawn directly from live records:

  • Financial queries: Ask which invoices are more than 30 days overdue, or check debtor balances across specific customer accounts.
  • Sales performance: Review product sales volumes by category for the previous week without generating manual spreadsheet reports.
  • Operational monitoring: Connect scoped agents that run weekly reporting summaries or identify transaction anomalies across your data.
  • Workflow automations: Build connected pipelines using tools like Make.com or n8n that trigger notifications based on specific data conditions.

Why read-only by default matters

Connecting an AI assistant to core business systems introduces operational risk if permissions are not strictly controlled. Granting an AI assistant unrestricted write access to your accounting ledgers or customer databases creates the risk of accidental record modifications, unintended data deletions, or incorrect transaction postings caused by prompt misunderstandings.

This is why business connectors should be read-only by default. In a read-only setup, the AI assistant can look up and summarise the records it is allowed to see, but has no permission to change or delete them. If a workflow involves writing or updating data, that action must be held for explicit human review and approval inside the primary application before any changes occur.

Our real-world example: the Invio Xero Connector

Our own product, the Invio Xero Connector, follows the same principle.

The Invio Xero Connector connects every Xero organisation you authorise to Claude or ChatGPT. Questions are answered per organisation, allowing bookkeepers and business owners running one or many Xero organisations to query their financial records in plain English.

Crucially, anything that writes to Xero waits for your approval inside Invio. The AI assistant can read authorised organisation data to provide financial answers, but cannot make alterations in Xero without your direct confirmation. The connector is paid monthly and priced by the number of organisations connected.

When is a custom connector worth it, and what does it cost?

Standard SaaS tools rarely provide pre-built integrations for bespoke software. A custom MCP connector is worth building when your business operates proprietary or industry-specific systems (such as a specialised point of sale, internal job tracker, or bespoke CRM) where standard marketplace connectors do not exist.

It delivers clear value when staff spend repetitive hours exporting and reconciling data manually, or when managers need instant answers from live operational systems without waiting for manual report generation.

At NullGlitch, our custom MCP connectors and AI integrations are built over your existing point-of-sale, CRM, or accounting data. Every integration is read-only by default and scoped in writing at NZ$120 an hour. We focus on scoped tasks designed to do defined jobs well, without unnecessary complexity.
